F1's 1 Season.
Have you raced any other oval
formulas?
V8's 2 and a bit seasons, Great grounding
Your favourite racing surface,
Shale or Tarmac, and why?
Either. I enjoy both
Do you dislike any particular
track?
Not really. Race anywhere. Didn't
like Barford too much though
Your favourite track and
why?
Coventry. Atmosphere. Great track
and stadium. Always a good crowd. And my local track
Your favourite CLOSED track and
why?
There are a few. Baarlo, Boston, Crewe, Stoke, All
for their individuality
What do you think about the
current BriSCA tracks?
Generally good. Most are tidy and well presented. All
track surfaces are good although Belle Vue was a little
bumpy last year. Anywhere where the general public can
enjoy themselves in public is good to me
What formula would you think
best to be on with the F1s and why?
V8's. It really is a great formula and should be used as
a support / stepping stone formula into F1. The racing is
always good and the V8 lads and all those associated are
great people
Do you think that the sport is
advertised and promoted well?
Not really. Sometimes I wish I
could be a promoter for a week just to see what could be
done. I think the new owners at Coventry have the right
idea. Trying to improve the stadium and advertise the
sport
Your BEST moment in your racing
career?
I have been lucky and had a few. I
won two finals at Coventry in V8's. Managed superstar in
that formula. But my best is probably my first win at
Cowdenbeath in F1. Good race with Carlos Perez (305) and
managed to win at a 'drivers track'
And WORST?
Injury at Buxton
What simple thing could improve
the sport (either for a driver OR spectator)?
For the driver I think bigger
crowds are what is needed. For the spectator better
facilities at the tracks
To make F1 stockcar racing
cheaper for the novice, what ONE thing would you
suggest?
Allow more track testing time on
shale. More time would mean less damage and less to fix =
lower cost
Which F1 stockcar driver do you
respect the most? (current)
Anyone that races but Frankie
Wainman JNR (515), Gary Castell (247), Andy Smith (391),
Dan Squire (291) and Steven Cayzer (380) are great
drivers who in my honest opinion would be champions in
any other sport the raced in. Especially Sprint cars in
the US. Drivers like this should be earning a living from
driving a race car
Which F1 stockcar driver do you
respect the most? (past)
Rob Pearce (175), Stu Smith (391)
and Gaz Bott (41)
How long do you / the team,
spend on preparing the car for a meeting?
3-4 nights a week and weekends.
Your current Stockcar - who
built it / where did it come from, what engine do you
run?
I am lucky enough to have two: Shale: Built
by B+K Services which Gary Castell (247) raced in 2003.
Engine is 510 cui from Pete Knight
Tarmac: Built by FWJ Racing. Engine 409 Small block
from Pete Knight
What does your partner think of
you being a racing driver?
Simone is great. She enjoys the
racing and I don't think she would ever miss me race. She
helps out at the garage and is always supportive.
Who helps you out, at the
meetings?
I have a great team of lads
Dad (Derek Hines): Helps me out so much with the
less glamorous jobs, Without him I would not race
Gordon Lowe: A clever chap who I have known since I was
6. Can do anything with the car and always has a solution
to a problem
Brian Wesley: I have known Brian since I was young too. A
superb help. Had a few goes himself so knows what its
like!
Mark (Mmmark) Henson: Mark travels from Ilkeston every
week to help. A mechanic by trade and has helped me so
much
Craig (Acker) Harris: Acker is now more well known than
me and Gary I think!!
Mark (Travel) Green: Helps out on race days and does such
a good job
Graham (Spike) Cottrell: Another who helps out at every
meeting
Ric (Batty Boy) Castell: Wheel and tyre specialist
Is there anybody you would you
like to thank? (sponsors, helpers etc)

to have some great sponsors: M.R.W Aluminium window
products, B-Warm Windows and Conservatories, Racin'
Cargo, Cleartherm, N. Stuchbury Garage, JP Skips,
